The niqab, as well as the burka and hijab, are worn to honor the Quran and the Hadith, a record of the sayings of Prophet Mohammad, which assert that a woman’s body should be covered out of modesty and respect.

While wearing the niqab is a choice for some, extremist group Islamic State (ISIS) has imposed harsh dress-code restrictions on women in areas under its control, which include parts of Syria and Iraq.
